Sign post for the many attractions, with York Minster in the background
York is about an hour’s drive away from the site but is well worth the drive and there is plenty to do to fill a day, whatever the weather.
You could take a walk through the famous Shambles, a narrow, cobbled lane with 14th century timber-framed buildings that hold a variety of quirky shops and if shopping is your thing there are plenty of shops around the city, ranging from big name brands to smaller independents.
There is also a market next to the Shambles with a fantastic range of stalls and street-food cabins. You will be spoilt for choice when choosing something to eat.
If you prefer sightseeing or want to mix up your day, there is plenty to do for all interests, including art galleries, museums (including the National Railway Museum and Jorvik Viking Centre) , The Minster and the walls. Clifford’s Tower will be of interest to history buffs and also has amazing views over the city.
Whether you’re a foodie, a bookworm, a Harry Potter fan, or have different hobbies, you will find something to entertain you in York.
